Barb’s Italian Summer #8: Piazza Barberini And Fontana Del Tritone In Rome

Today I would like to take you to Piazza Barberini with its beautiful Fontana del Tritone (Triton Fountain).  The Triton Fountain was created in 17th century by Gian Lorenzo Bernini, a very famous Baroque sculptor whose work you can find all around Rome.  Sea god Triton kneels majestically in the middle of the fountain on four dolphin tails, raising a big conch to his lips. Tritone was the first fountain built by Bernini in Rome, and at that time it was a very innovative deed: It was the first romantic, garden-style fountain built in the heart of a big urban area for the practical purpose of providing water from an aqueduct. Bernini was a visionary who proved that even a functional urban piece can become a beautiful work of art.

Another great post – and beautiful pictures!
Bernini is something very special, it just cuts through the air somehow… it’s only him, and possibly Michelangelo – who’s able to do that.. imo…

    Hope you’re enjoying Rome! :)

    • I absolutely agree – it’s special and unique in so many ways. Isn’t it wonderful to observe the eternal footprints of another man’s genius in this world?

      Rome is fabulous :)
