Years ago I promised myself that I wouldn’t be one of those people who write about how they bought / built / rebuilt their house in Italy. This fad is unusually persistent and as more and more people write books about their Italian house adventures, it gets a little boring (to me). They have their Italian dream, they buy the house, they leave for Italy full of hopes and illusions, they find out it’s not what they thought it would be, they struggle, they call it funny and write a book about it.
The next morning I woke up, got myself a red bikini and a ticket to Italy. It was time to be me again. It was time to lie on the hot sand, swim in the warm sea, and dance between a pair of sheets until sunrise. To explore sensations, to enjoy the delights of my physical existence, to simply live and love – on my terms again.
I admit I’m a hair freak. I admire women who are able to have a haircut just anywhere they happen to be without worrying about the person who’s touching their locks. I’m obsessively sensitive about my hair. It takes some time for me to trust my hairdresser, and as (bad) luck would have it, when I finally do, she decides to have a baby, take a year off to search for her soul in Nepal, or move to Iceland. Yes, it has happened. All of it.
Finding a life that fits is like finding a perfect pair of shoes: It makes you feel delicious and your feet don’t hurt with every step. Ideally, you don’t even notice you’re wearing it. It was made for you.
We’re not born with a perfect pair of shoes on our feet. We need to outgrow a few, wear them thin, hate them, hate them a little more, throw them out, lose them, return them, give them away, until we find a pair we really truly love and choose to keep. Probably not forever: just until we find a pair that’s even more amazing, juicy and marvelous.
